EXTRA CURRICULAR OPTIONS FOR EARLY BIRDS

We are so lucky to have such fantastic, giving specialist teachers at OLC.  At the moment your children have the opportunity to join in:

  • Choir - Tuesday mornings with Mrs Sherborne at 8am in the Library.
  • Running Club - Wednesday mornings with Mrs Sinclair at 8am on the oval. Students are to bring sneakers.
  • Dance Club - Friday mornings at 8am with Mrs Haines in the Hall!

Students are not to arrive at school before 8.20am unless it is for a scheduled event/meeting. If you need to drop your child earlier than this, please note that they will need to wait outside the office in the main courtyard. They are not remain outside of classrooms, play in the undercover area or oval as there is no supervision in place for these times.

MAKING JESUS REAL IN 5H

On Wednesday, we were very lucky to have a visit from Peter Mitchell (Mitch), the creator of the Making Jesus Real (MJR) Programme that we run at school. He spent time with the students talking about the simple ways that we can show love and kindness and how a very small thing has enormous impact in changing someone's day.

Mitch shared a beautiful story about a grandfather talking to his grandchild about the two wolves that live inside of us. He talks about the things we do to feed each wolf...the negative wolf is fed by behaviours of complaining, whining, blaming others, being unkind, not helping at home, not greeting people using their name and other similar things.

Mitch explained that the positive wolf is made up of behaviours such as smiling at people, using names when you talk to people, saying thank you or sorry when we get it wrong, helping out at home, including people and being welcoming and encouraging.  He said that the wolf that wins is the one we feed...

This week, you may like to ask your child to recall the tale of the two wolves, or if they have forgotten it to share again the ideas presented above.  We would appreciate you checking in with them to see how they think they are going with feeding their positive and negative wolves.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT – A MESSAGE FROM MRS MEYER

Dear OLC Community,
As you know one of our family's recently suffered the unexpected loss of their husband and father in February this year. Dave Clift was husband to Annmarie and dad to Violet in Year 5H, and to former OLC students Damon (17), and Sunny (15). Annmarie has been overwhelmed by the love and support she has already received in terms of willing listeners, shoulders to cry on and lovingly prepared meals. Many people have continued to ask how they might best help the family as they move forward. Here is a way. Without Dave and an income, Annmarie could really use some financial support. If you are able, even if in a small way to contribute to this Go Fund Me Campaign, she would be forever grateful. Thank you and may God Bless you.

INSIDE THE CLASSROOM

We loved taking over the Year 6 Leader jobs while they were on camp.  Flag raising was a definite favourite!

For the first few weeks of Term 2, we have been integrating preparation for NAPLAN into our learning programmes.  We have focused on problem solving strategies in Maths, completed our Narrative unit of work and have begun our persuasive writing unit where the class wrote a COLD TASK on “Should Children Contribute at Home by Doing Chores?” You would be surprised to hear that majority of the children presented points to support this topic and some great ideas were presented, available to read if you ever need to argue this topic at home!

 HOME LEARNING

Thank you to those parents that sign their child’s home learning grid.  Please ensure you are checking they are completing their set tasks and sign to indicate this, especially on a Thursday night before they return their home learning books to class on a Friday for Mr Torrese to mark.   On the grid this week is time for your child to prepare for their Term 2 Speaking and Listening Challenge: "Someone Who Inspires Me and Why?" Information to assist your child with their preparation is available in last week's blog post.

WHEELIE WALKIE WASTE FREE WEDNESDAYS

This wonderful initiative began last week and will run for the whole term. There is a class challenge that 5H would love to win, as we would be able to choose a class excursion anywhere in the Busselton region, a great prize indeed!  If you are unable to wheel or walk, please try on a Wednesday for your child to come with a waste free lunchbox!

 AWARD WINNERS

Congratulations to our week 1 and 2 Super Star award winners, Alexandra and Chloe!  Keep up the fantastic work girls!
