Term 1 Week 1

Week 1 in Review!

What a fabulous first week we had in 5H and what a wonderful year of learning we can look forward to!
During the week, to take photos for our Birthday Chart display, we found out who was born in the same month as us. Lucy and Mr Torrese found out they were birthday twins, both being born on the 17th  of  February!

The children have loved taking responsibility for their new iHelp jobs.  Special Shoutout to DJ L&L (Lucy and Laura) for being brave enough to be the first class DJs to share their favourite songs with us.  The DJ job is a way we can build trust in 5H where everyone can be free to share their choice of song without being judged.  It’s going to be great to hear everyone’s favourite type of music in the week’s ahead. Luca was our first “Earth Child” and didn’t forget once to turn the lights out and close the doors each time we left the room to help us with our sustainability. The iHelp jobs will change each Monday and if your child doesn’t have a job for the week they will be the first to select their jobs the following week!

The Student Lottery has been successful in helping us to randomly select people for such things as the iHelp chart and teams for group work.

We set our SMART Goals for the term displayed them up on our ‘2020 Vision” display to highlight the areas we are going to put our efforts towards improving this term.

We even found a moment of mindfulness in our busy first week where we were silent and present to begin to colour in our book covers.

We played some fun “Getting to Know You” group games that had as practising the skills we need when working with a team.

A special shout out to our iHELP Photographers from last week, Tilly and Tieg, who took many of the photos included in this week's blog!

This week we will be beginning our Mathematics Unit on Understanding Whole Numbers up to the Millions.  Your child will require a calculator to work with some large numbers. If they have not brought one in already, please help them to do so before Tuesday’s Maths lesson so they are able to play our maths game: Digit Destructo!

From Mr T
Thursday and Friday were also great days too this week.

We set up our Speaking and Listening Challenges for the term on the theme: "Something Special and Precious to me"
I demonstrated a speaking presentation by bringing in an item that is special to me. Ask you child for more detail.....we'll see if they were listening!!

This week's sensational speakers will be:
Thursday - Georgia, Noah and Joe
Friday - Lolah and Ruby

Measurement will start this week after some diagnostic assessment about converting units of measurement, length, perimeter and area. This assessment will help with our Maths groups on a Thursday and Friday for this term.

STEM - kicking off with Earth and Space Sciences. Ask your child for one fact about each planet!!
The STEM project will involve making a documentary and 3D model about our Solar System.
More details soon!!!

My gift to you......
I hope you've been enjoying our Thursday and Friday afternoon catchy song "Jesus is a Rock" being sung endlessly around the house over the weekend.....my gift to your home!!

We look forward to seeing you at the Parent Evening on Tuesday!

Kathy and Adrian
