Term 1 Week 8

To all our 5H families,
A HUGE big air hug goes out to everyone who has made the decision to home school.

I wasn't at school today as I was on parental leave to care for my daughters Lucy and Emily who have head colds.  The class had Alison Martin for their relief teacher who worked through the lessons that I sent in to ensure the class continued with their normal timetable and learning!  With most of you staying at home it has made it easier for "social distancing" and the children were spread out around the class.

OUR LEARNING
ENGLISH
Here are some snapshots of our Narrative Writing from last week and some peer editing where our buddies gave us feedback on our writing.  We are continuing to be authors this week, ensuring our narratives have a hook, character and setting descriptions and a plot that works toward creating a climax and resolution.

Our Reading comprehension strategy this week is Skimming and Scanning.  This is an important skill to learn as most of our adult reading experiences involve us subconsciously doing it.

Our phoneme (sound) for this week is 'd' and the Sound Waves chart tells us there are 3 choices (grahemes) to spell it when we are sounding out a word and hear the 'd' sound.
Duck Extended Sound Box

We have also been looking at homophones.  A homophone is a word that sounds the same as another but has a different meaning and a different way to spell it.  For example meet/ meat, two/to/two, there/they're/their, which/witch.  Many of the children are confusing which one to use in their writing for the correct meaning.  We played a game to try to help us to learn different pairs of homophones.
MATHEMATICS
We have been learning about fractions of a whole and fractions of a set.  This week we begin to explore Equivalence of fractions.

A PLUG FOR CHAMPION LIFE!!
An online programme that was introduced to our school last year was Champion Life.  O.L.C has recently resubscribed and I think it would be a valuable addition to your home learning programme.

When we’re faced with lots of changes, two strategies we can use to help manage stress that often accompanies the uncertainty of change are

1) looking for the positives in those changes and
2) acknowledging that a daily routine in our lives is good for our mental health

Champion Life's  online delivery means motivational role models and engaging, positive health & wellbeing experiences are just a log on away and can easily become part of your daily home learning routine.

Champion Life’s online activities engage in behaviours like physical activity, positive self-talk, being mindful and practising gratitude, which can all measurably improve your child's health & wellbeing while being stuck at home.

If you click on the link below it will play you a clip to introduce you to the positives of including a Champion Life session on a daily basis for your child.  They will be able to complete  weekly challenges and check in with their mental health rating too.  I highly recommend adding it to your child’s day.

We will also be using the programme in class as part of our Daily Fitness.

Thanks for your ongoing support  and we hope you and your families are all safe and well!

Kathy and Adrian
