Term 1 - Speaking and Listening
Challenge
“Something that is special and
precious to me”
Choose something at home, with your mum or dad, that is special to you.
Think about 3 to 5 reasons why this item is special to you.
Write these reasons down. Make sure these reasons will be interesting for your audience to listen to. Make note cards for your presentation that summarises these points.
Practise your presentation using the 6 speaking techniques that we have been practising in Term 1.
You will get a score out of 5 for each of these techniques. A total score out of 30.
Decide whether you will bring this item in for your presentation day or, if its too big or too precious, if you will take a photo/s of it on your laptop to share with your audience on the day.
This term your presentation should go for at least 90 seconds.

Make eye contact with your partner regularly. When speaking
to a larger group, make eye contact with many members of the
audience, in front of you and to the sides, as you speak. |
Use clear volume, pacing
and pauses to engage the audience 5

and explaining. Pause after introducing new

Use tone of voice to enrich your

Use gestures to emphasize a point you

can use gestures to maintain attention and add interest to your presentation. |
Use visual aids to engage

Show the audience
models, pictures or examples of your topic. Be careful not to
hide your face. Don’t let the visual aids become a distraction. Do you speak about each of the visuals or
slide? |
