Week 9 Term 3

Hi 5H families,

There are some important updates and reminders for you in this week’s blog:

 CLAY MAKING

A huge thank you to Sasha Boundy (Esmerelda’s mum and “Made By the Sea” pottery creator ) for being our guest artist for our second attempt at making pottery bowls.  Sasha showed some of her failures and successes and then modelled a step-by-step process for us to follow.

The class displayed great growth mindset after attempt number one, learning from their mistakes and accepting the challenge to try again.  They are all so proud of their efforts.  Their pottery pieces are now on their way to be fired in the kiln at Happ's Pottery and will return to us before the end of the term for us to glaze (finger crossed all in one piece!).  Sasha has once again offered to assist us with the glazing process and her expertise is much appreciated.

 Operation Christmas Child

Your child should have brought home a note last week outlining our school’s participation in the 'Operation Christmas Child' shoe box initiative.  This has been a wonderful OLC tradition for many years and reflects our school value of Compassion. The completed shoe boxes are sent to underprivileged children throughout the world, who have never received a gift before, so is a great way for the children to learn and think about people who are not as fortunate as them and be appreciative for all that they have in their life.

The children will be placed into in groups of five and between them, they will fill a shoebox with a variety of items suitable for a boy aged between 10 and 14. The items do not need to be expensive. Each child in the group will be asked to cover the cost of sending the shoebox to its destination. We ask them to bring in $2.50 each to cover the $10 total. The children will be given time in the classroom to pack the shoebox.

Please see the flyer below for further information:

Please check your child's note that clearly states which item category they need to bring:

- Something to love
- Something to play with
- Something to draw with or write on
- Something for personal hygiene
- Something to wear

Items are to be no longer than 20cm long and not too bulky as they will not fit in the shoe box.

Your child will need to have their items in by the End of week 9 (Friday 16th September) or the latest the following Monday. There will be a box at the front of the classroom for all donations to be put into.

 Character Strengths

Dear Parents, currently at OLC we are focusing on modelling and observing different character strengths. This upcoming week we are looking for people who show Kindness. Can you encourage your child to reflect on the following?

Some dates to note for the rest of the term:

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory Celebration Pyjama Day

I have been persuaded by the class (via their writing persuasive texts) to have a pyjama day to celebrate our incredible reading and activities of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory completed this term. We have finally decided on a date: the last Monday of this Term, the 20th of September.

On this day we plan to see who will be the lucky “Hot Chocolatte” Golden Ticket Winners and watch the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movies to compare and contrast them with the book.  We will also be making hot chocolates with marshmallows and having an afternoon “read in” of Roald Dahl’s other novels! A permission slip for your child to watch the 2005 version of the movie (as this is rated PG) and to join in with the hot chocolate making will be coming home tomorrow.  They will need to B.Y.O. a mug, cushion and any Roald Dahl books from their shelves on this day!

If they are not comfortable wearing a pair of pyjamas to school, then tracksuit pants and a jumper is fine!  If you child is one that likes to play on the oval at break times, then I would also encourage them to wear their sneakers rather than wear slippers or Ugg boots as they could get muddy down there.

 Book Week

Our Book Week celebration will be held on the final Wednesday of term (22nd of September).  Your child is asked to dress-up as a book character.  The theme for 2021 is “Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds,” so their costume may like to reflect that (but doesn’t have to).  An assembly will be held in the first part of that day for the children to share the costumes with the rest of the school.

 Footy Colours Day

On the last day of Term 3, Friday 24th September. We will be having a dress up day where your child is able to wear their favourite AFL (or other sporting team) coloured clothing for the day.  A gold coin donation is asked for the uniform free privilege with all funds raised going towards our Pastoral Care Fridge and St Vinnies. Thanks for your support!

With all these free dress days in the final week, that means only 2 days of regular uniform in Week 10 and both of those are sports uniform days (Tuesday and Friday)!  Thankfully this will give me a rest from asking them to tuck their shirts in!

Thanks for your continued support,

Kathy and Adrian
