Term 4, Week 4

 Term 4, Week 4

What an incredible term of learning we are having!

The class are busy learning about fractions, researching and writing an information report about their chosen illness, creating their presentations delving deeply into the characters of our class novel, Wonder, revising our Friendology skills and diving into their future dreams, who they want to be when they grow up and how they are going to get there. WOW (insert mind blowing emoji)!

Honestly, it is such a blessing to be working with such motivated and beautiful souls. You should all be extremely proud of these little legends you have created.

HOMEWORK

Thank you to those of you who are signing our Home Learning Grids and ensuring your child is completing their set homework.

Reading Wonder: The children are doing an incredible job of reading Wonder during their class sessions. If they are away for a session or a day, it would be great for them to keep up with the book at home. Or maybe they may like to revisit the parts we have read in the book for clarification or new ideas.

Here is a link to a playlist on YouTube that is a teacher reading the book Wonder,  if you feel as though your child would benefit from sitting and listening to the book being read to them.

Mathletics: Each week I have been setting two teacher tasks for students to complete for their homework. These tasks, reflect what we have been focusing on during class. If they don’t complete the tasks weekly, they start to bank up a bit. Could you please check in with your children and see if they have completed their required tasks.

WA Country Health: Last week there was an option in the homework to complete a drawing that reflected one of the core values of the WA Country Health. It is a competition run by WA Country Health, and if selected, the drawing will be displayed in one of WA Country Health’s hospital. Thank you to Cody’s Mum, Danielle Marsden for organising this for us. The entries need to be in by this Friday, so if we could please make sure they are back by Wednesday, 3rd November, that would be great.

Leaders T-Shirt Design – Last week, Miss Hurst spoke to the children about an opportunity for them to have their design on 2022’s Leaders T-Shirts. They were given the following design brief

·      Needed to be done in grey lead pencil

·      Try to avoid a circular design

·      Inclusion of the Wadandi culture would be given bonus points

·      Reflect the environment and/or people of the South West

·      Represent transition or growth in some way

Children need to have these designs back by Monday, 1st November.

Updating Laptops

The following message is from Mrs Johnson and is in regards to updating Laptops AT HOME please and thank you.

Students who have not recently (within the last month or two) updated their laptops may experience issues connecting/printing to the printers at school.  This is due to increased security requirements introduced by Microsoft to fix some printing security issues. These have been applied to the print server and students need to apply the updates to their laptops.

Some student laptops are out of date and need to be updated ASAP. The students need to plug their laptops into the power at home and then go to Settings, Update & Security and check for updates. After the updates are installed, the laptop needs to be restarted. They will need to do this 3 times to ensure all updates are installed.

It is important that the laptop is connected to power while they do the updates, and they should not close the lid of the laptop (as this puts the laptop to sleep and the update will not install).

Unfortunately, there are not enough chargers or time to do this at school, so carrying out the process at home would be greatly appreciated. If there is lack of internet issues at home, please let us know and we can attempt to carry this out at school.

Thank you,

Janine Johnson

Wellbeing Week

We are holding a whole week of whole school Wellbeing from Monday to Friday in Week 4. There will be a small activity each day with a wellbeing focus.

Student Leadership Presentation

Mr Torrese has spoken to the Year 5 students in regards to applying for leadership in 2022. In week 7, if they are interested in it, the students will present their speech to students and teachers. Below is a rundown of the expectations. If you have any questions, please see Adrian Torrese.

Student Leadership Presentation

2022 Nomination

Monday 22nd November Week 7

What your presentation should include:

1.    Information about you.

2.    How you have contributed to OLC in the past – interschool teams, community events, choir etc….

3.    How you have lived out some/all of the school values – with examples….

4.    Why you think you will be a great student leader in 2022.

Remember to present using the speaking skills you have learnt this year.

Make appropriate eye contact

Make eye contact with your audience regularly.  When speaking to a larger group, make eye contact with many members of the audience, in front of you and to the sides, as you speak.

Use clear volume, pacing and pauses to engage the audience

Speak slowly and clearly when describing and explaining. Pause after introducing new information.

Use tone of voice to enrich your presentation

Sound excited when describing exciting things.

Speak quietly to add some drama or to add effect.

Use gestures to emphasize a point you are trying to make.

Think about where in your presentation you can use gestures to maintain attention and add interest to your presentation.

Presentation Structure

Use the speaking presentation framework that you have been using in all writing and speaking activities.

Introduction – be creative

Important details – address each of the 4 points above

Conclude – leave an impression!

Your presentation should be between 2-3 minutes. Good luck!
